How to cultivate a Supercharged mindset in Business - By Louise Fernando
This week, Louise Fernando, one of our partner coaches at The Ethical Coaching Company, writes this great blog post for us. Let’s dive in.
One of the most overlooked necessities in business is mindset. It's an area that no one really wants to admit is an issue and usually gets laid at the bottom of the pile.
Why?! Because people have a skewed perception that it means" failure" and that they aren't good enough if they admit there might be something not working the way they'd hoped. No one really wants to admit that it might be a mindset issue, so it gets pushed to the side. YET… it is your mindset that could create the next breakthrough for you.
Often I find that instead of addressing the issue, people just try harder and keep pushing at the thing, hoping results will come. But they are exhausted, burned out, and overwhelmed.
Or if you just buy that special strategy course or programme, that's going to be the thing that changes everything. Or if you just sit for 8 hours and don't take a break, then it will all be good. Often that's not the answer. And ultimately business owners will do a full circle before they realise that maybe it is a mindset issue. That maybe something deeper is at play. Maybe there is something deeper within holding them back.
So what do I mean when I say mindset? Because it's a word thrown around everywhere with no real context of what it is or how it can deeply help. Mindset is a phrase that has been overpopulated in the self-growth and development world, with many fads, and different ways to focus on growth and mindset. So let's take a look at what it really is.
As someone who has over 20 years of qualifying experience in working with the mind, habits, and deeply entrenched patterns of criminal behaviour and now business. Mindset is far deeper than the mind. The mind is just a part of it.
The body is in the mind….which may confuse you. Because technically and from a human perspective, isn't the brain in the body?! Well, it is from a physical aspect. But the subconscious mind governs the body. It heals, it controls your nervous system and it does the work to keep your body functioning all beneath the surface.
So the body is really IN the mind. This is where mindset goes beyond what we think. And this is why with this knowledge you can cultivate a Killer mindset in Business. This is why when working with your mind, it actually goes far deeper than you may realise.
Let's go on a little journey…..
You've jumped in your car to head to the local supermarket and when you've arrived, you've wondered how on earth you got there and then prayed that you're so lucky not to have hit anyone or crashed the car. You start to worry that you've missed something and slight panic creeps in.
Deep in the zone, you can't even remember getting there! The subconscious mind has done its job again. Why?! Because you were in a trance. Zoned out by the subconscious taking over. You didn't even have to think about it. It happened so naturally you got to your destination without a thought. Scary huh?! Now panic over, because you would have been aware, but because it is a pattern of behaviour, it just happened so naturally.
Well…. it's the same in business. Your subconscious mind is in the driving seat and until you make the unconscious conscious, the same repeating habits and patterns will just keep playing over and over. It is governing 97% of your behaviours, all under the hood. Without you even realising.
So to build a rock-solid mindset, changes will need to occur on a deeper level, not just on a superficial level. We aren't talking affirmations and vision boards here. We are talking discipline, habit tracking self-awareness and enquiry. We are talking about a rise in consciousness awareness, being present and being aware of emotions and triggers. Not just mindset.
This is where mindset work is the key propelling factor that will literally take your business to its next stretch. When you WAKE up from the trance and pay attention. When you become consciously aware of what is happening and how it is happening.
Most people work in cycles, and patterns, over and over and over and over. I call it the Business Truman Show. Because it just seems like another day, unconsciously going through the motions. And before you know it, another day has passed and you've found yourself in the same habit loop. Unfortunately, this same loop will reoccur until it becomes noticeable and changes are made on that deeper level.
SLOW THE HELL down.. the busier you are, the less likely you are to notice the small cracks start to appear, which will eventually over time become problematic. When you slow everything down, you can start to see what's working, and what's not and make decisions from a truly aligned place. Slowing down can help you to notice the subtle changes in your body, your behaviours, and what keeps reoccurring.
1. Disrupting your routine - I know how much you love a routine and naturally, you will fall into the same chair to drink coffee,
sit at the same table with friends, go on the same walks, and most likely eat the same foods week after week until you get sick of them. DISRUPT is key and is going to help you to make small changes. Movement is one of the biggest disruptors there are. Because it shocks the body out of comfort and its natural state. So, instead of working harder and trying to get more done…. step away. Go for a walk in nature, dance around your office, or living room, and shake off that stuck, stagnant feeling. Make this part of your routine.
2. Drink water - water is great for flushing toxins out of the body and re-energising. Simple, but so needed. Let's not complicate
it. It's as simple as this.
3. Sleep - If you aren't an early bird, let's not try and do the 5 am club. By 9 am you'll be shattered and lacking energy. It’s about
being aware of your own circadian rhythms and knowing what is best for YOU. The better you sleep, the better you feel. The better you feel, the more energised you'll feel to do the things in business you desire. No one wants a washed-out CEO. Fresh, vibrant, and fully recharged is the new 5 am club. P.S. There are no rewards for doing all-nighters. It was a teen thing….
4. Mediation or a NAP- Yup I said it, a Nap!! I remember thinking that people were lazy if they napped throughout the day, now it’s part
of who I am. Set an alarm, lie down, and have 10 minutes of nothingness. Any more than that, you'll wake up and wonder what year it is, and what planet you're on and feel like you've been unconscious for weeks. So BIGGEST TIP - no more than 10 mins. If you're not keen on napping. Then a 10-minute meditation.
5. Work with someone - who will help you uncover what going on in the subconscious mind and create these changes that could change the way you move forward and do business.
These methods are just a small fraction of the list that I have used over the years, there are many more. However small changes have long-term impacts. Your well-being is EVERYTHING. And if you are tired, exhausted, and washed out, then that energy and vibe unfortunately can be sensed by others. To attract the best
into your business, whilst keeping yourself fresh, aligned, and raring to go. It requires working on YOU, your body, and your vehicle. Without the vehicle, it's harder to get to the destination. It requires compassion and love to yourself for being where you are at just now. With the understanding that things can and will change when you take action and decide.
